The Lady Kats will open district play tonight against New Caney.

The season started in early November with officially 12 varsity players. The first games against  Katy Patow and Magnolia West may not have been victories, but the girls really came back in the Baytown tournament.

Playing two successful games in the tournament was a huge comeback for the team. Defeating Dayton 51-42 and Pasadena Memorial 52-42, the team is really working and communicating with each other as the prepare for district play.

“Our tournament was important because we started to figure how to play as a team,” senior Mya Villareal said. “The more games we play, the more we figure out how to work together.”

The team is starting to get to know each other as the season progresses.

“I’m looking forward to seeing all our faces on the banners and getting to know my team and coaches,” senior Allison Aitken said.

The season looks bright for the players as they wrap up their first couple of games.

“We are going to do good this season,” senior Tete Hollis said. “My thought about this season is that I think we will see playoffs. We came together and got it.”

Players know hard work and effort can lead to a successful season.

“Communication and learning how to play as a team is important,”  junior A’Miya King said. “We just have to work on offense.”

The team will need to look to each other and work as a team as the season progresses.

“We need to focus on working together as a team and just getting the plays down so that we can do good this season,” senior Jasmine Kelly said.

Losing several key players from last season, the team is adjusting to each other. They are looking to new leaders on the team.

“They were all good teams, but it’s early in the season,” senior Ali McNew said. “The Baytown tournament was was our first time playing as a team together.”

The teams’ mind is made up to do the best they can with what they have.

“I think we just need to play our own game, and we will have a good season,” senior Rayelyn Alison said. “Once we learn to work together and focus on us, we can win.”
