Some people want it all
But I don’t want nothing at all
If it ain’t you baby
If I ain’t got you baby

The lyrics of “I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys plays as the girls practice their moves after school. The song’s lyrics echo around the empty cafeteria as the song is played over and over again. Each time the girls polish their routine. It is competition season, and for the members of winter guard, it is an exciting part of the year.

February 8th was the first competition of the Winter Guard team. The team placed fourth in their division.

“I was happy with fourth place,” freshman Christa Sawyer said. “It was definitely an awesome start.”

These girls practice after school every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. They are getting ready for their next competition.

“My goal is to make top 3 but also have fun and grow as a team” junior Erika Alvarez said.

The team has experienced some struggles. Two new directors are here taking the place of Coach Baum, the only director the guard has ever known since their beginning.

“I was sad that the old director is not there anymore,” freshman Christa Sawyer said. “But I feel like we are now ready to go and do the best we can.”
