The first Sunday in February is a day that should be considered a national holiday. People from all over the country come together on this one day to watch an annual event that is guaranteed to be more than just another football game. The Super Bowl has a lot to offer to its audiences. Viewer’s sit down on their couches to support their teams and watch the halftime show but some people turn on their TVs just for the commercials.
Every year, thousands of people eagerly await the dramatic and exorbitant commercials that will come on their televisions in between plays. For this year’s Super Bowl, a 30 second TV spot cost up to $7 million. Many of the 2021 Super Bowl commercials flopped, but there was a good variety of commercials from the 2022 Super Bowl.
A fan favorite commercial in the Super Bowl was for BMW . Arnold Schwarzenegger and Salma Hayek starred as the infamous couple, Zeus and Hera who are retiring from Mount Olympus to Palm Springs to promote the company’s vehicle.
There were several commercials that were trailers from up and coming shows and movies. The official “Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness ” trailer was dropped towards the beginning of the game as well as a new trailer of the Disney + series, “Moon Knight.” In 2021, Marvel released a TV show or a movie almost every month, but “Moon Knight” will be the first thing to drop in 2022 on March 30th. Another tv show that had a teaser in the Super Bowl was the new Amazon series that will be a prequel to the “Lord of the Rings” trilogies, “The Rings of Power .” My fans are skeptical of the new show and it has received a lot of backlash. A trailer for a thriller film, “Nope ,” directed by Jordan Peele also made its way across viewer’s screens. The movie is set in California on a horse ranch and the caretakers encounter an ominous force that is messing with everyone’s behavior.
An interesting and inventive commercial was a QR code that floated around on viewers screens for what seemed like eternity but it was only 60 seconds. It was an ad for the company,Coinbase which is a cryptocurrency exchange organization and the ad ended up crashing their app. Another interesting ad for an Oculus VR headset. It showed the journey of an animatronic dog and his journey to find his friends again in the virtual reality world.
Michelob, Disney, Uber Eats and Amazon all had multiple tv spots in between the big game. Amazon used the newly wedded couple, Colin Jost and Scarlett Johansson to promote the Alexa but they put a new twist on things. In the ad, instead of Jost giving Alexa commands, Alexa could read his thoughts. Most of the time, the things that went through Jost’s head were not meant for others to hear and yet Alexa repeated them all.
For Super Bowl LVI there were some good trailers, some bad ads and a few mediocre commercials. In the end though, they were all worth sitting down and watching a football game just to be able to see the intuitive creations that companies came up with to promote their products and to enjoy another tradition of Super Bowl Sunday.
