MORE THAN A MONTH. The contributions of African Americans should not be limited to one month.

As the end of the month comes to a closure we reflect on the Black History heritage that all should celebrate with posters and announcements, also giving students to time to learn about why it is so important. The school should be supporting Black History month to focus on the contributions of African Americans to Willis ISD. It serves as a annual celebration of achievements of African Americans that have helped out America, including the struggles they have gone through.

The story of Black History began in 1915, 50 years after the 13th Amendment abolished slavery in the United States. From then schools and organizations have been influenced by the strong message it leaves for the African Americans, that all people recognize and appreciate their contributions.  The month also gives African Americans a voice in America as they have been oppressed throughout the ages and recognizes all the pain their ancestors have gone through. They can express their culture by performances, clubs and lectures in school.

Willis ISD should implement things all around the school, including famous plays about black history that have people that have impacted the entire world with their strong message or leadership. A perfect example is Martin Luther King, an African American who saw the whole world as one whole not separated. He fought against the cruel world who saw the world in black and white in America.

Lecturing kids in middle school or high school can make them have a perspective about other cultures and why black history is such an important piece of history to America, knowing the struggles African Americans ancestors have gone through due to unfairness and racism. Understanding how far they have came from being discriminated against to being appreciated that is why we celebrate Black History. A strong message would let people of color know they are never alone and they are appreciated for everything you or your family have done to leave their mark on the world.

February may be over, but the impact of the African American community on Willis, Texas and the nation should not only be spotlighted for one month. The school should plan more activities during the month of February and beyond to celebrate and honor the community throughout the year.
