Looking off the diving board meters high in the air down at the bubbling water below, senior Kelsey Weddington prepares for her last state diving performance of her high school career. After years of success in the sport, having made state for the second year and breaking school records, Kelsey managed to place 11th in the entire state of Texas for diving this year.
Being able to balance state-level diving, cheerleading and being a top student is not something that many students can do; but Willis High School’s very own Kelsey Weddington manages to push through and excel in all these areas.
“I would have to say that my father is one of the people responsible for not only introducing me to diving as a sport, but also motivating me to stay with it and even pursue it at the collegiate level,” senior Kelsey Weddington said.
A rocky start to the state competition had Weddington in doubt, but in the end, she placed 11th in the state of Texas.
“Honestly, the competition started off rough,” Weddington said. “I was eventually able to turn it around and make it to the finals. Ultimately, I’m very happy with how I finished.”
Following her major success in the sport, Weddington plans to continue diving in college at Tulane University, a prestigious school in New Orleans, Louisiana.
“Knowing that I wanted to continue with diving in college really encouraged me to explore D1 schools that I otherwise might not have researched,” Weddington said. “Ultimately, this search led me to Tulane University, which I believe will provide me with a great academic, athletic and social college experience.”
With the many great experiences her four years of diving with the aquakats has given her, Weddington looks forward to her college experience and is very proud of how far she has come.
“I’m very excited that I get to continue my diving career in college,” Weddington said. “I’m very grateful to have received an academic scholarship to Tulane that will enable such an outstanding education for me from such a prestigious university.”
