“I’m just a girl in a world” is a common phrase that’s been around social media platforms such as TikTok for months. This phrase is from a song that is used in mainly teenage girl tik toks of them doing things that can raise some concerns. Some of these things include hitting curbs and not being able to park but it is okay because “they’re just a girl” or using bad spending habits by returning something and buying something later on, making it “free.” However, this trend has gotten a little out of hand which leads many people to wonder if this is the girl version of “boys will be boys.”
The “I’m just a girl trend” is a glorified “Boys will be boys” phrase and should be stopped.
To start with, the car trend. All around TikTok, there are videos where girls will be showing off their parking jobs or dent marks that they’ve made but say “I’m just a girl.” The parking in the videos they proudly show off leaves people to wonder how they even got their license with that parking. Along with awful parking jobs, a lot of these videos will show off how many cars each girl has wrecked and use a funny sound to glorify their actions. This shows how reckless some girls are but glorify it as their just a girl which implies that all girls park and wreck cars.
Along with the cars, “I’m just a girl” also glories about improper eating habits with another common phrase called girl dinner. This girl dinner ties back to the “I’m just a girl” trend and encourages unhealthy eating with portion sizes and lack of nutrients in meals. Some examples of girl dinners include a bowl of goldfish, ketchup, mozzarella sticks and carrots. Meals like these include the most random selection which provides little to no nutritional value but it’s seen as okay because “They’re just a girl.. This not only encourages improper eating but leaves girls more prone to other problems such as eating disorders since its seen as so normal.
Not to mention, the “I’m just a girl trend” does not seem to value financial literacy as much as it should. For example, a girl will make a TikTok where she buys a $50 shirt and then returns it and “makes money” but she’s just gaining the money back that she originally had and isn’t making any money at all. This trend is full of scenarios just like that or where free shipping = cheap. This trend instead of encouraging to save money it does the opposite and encourages more shopping which isn’t the smartest financial decision.
While many will argue that the “I’m just a girl” trend embraces femininity and allows girls to live their lives, it’s not exactly an ideal life that is being followed by this trend. It seems fun and silly at first but really it glorifies bad driving, bad eating habits, and spending habits but is seen as normal because “they’re just a girl”.
Society needs to go ahead and end this trend that has been prevalent in the past few months. Although it’s silly and cute, it’s not all that and instead glorifies bad behaviors which gets away with just like the “boys will be boys” trend. Instead of glorifying those habits, society needs to invent a new “I’m just a girl” but with the healthiest habits such as practicing safe driving and balanced eating, a happy middle with being silly and living your best life.
