Interchanging melodies and captivating harmonies surround you in the performing arts center as you’re seated, watching the Wildkat Choir’s annual Pre-UIL concert. The transforming dynamics of the unique musical arrangements performed by the many Wildkat choirs are a real treat to the ears of many.
Every year, the Wildkat Choir program holds a Pre-UIL concert in the spring just before they compete in their UIL competitions as an opportunity to showcase the music they have been focusing on for months in preparation for the competition. This event is free to attend, and by going; community members show the choirs some greatly appreciated support for all the hard work they have been putting in these last few weeks.
“Preparations have been stressful, because UIL is such a big thing for everyone in choir,” junior Tripp Henager said. “Directors learning how they should conduct and teach the music, the students learning the music and bringing it to life, and the accompanist learning the tempo of the directors, etc..”
Despite all the stress the choirs have been facing amidst this learning process, there have been successful and enjoyable moments in the preparation of their music and they are looking forward to presenting their skills at the show this Tuesday.
“Last week in varsity mixed, we went out in the hallway to sing to hear what we sound like and after reflecting, we sounded more prepared than we thought,” Henager said. “We all work as a team to create great music to bring emotion to a story, so I can’t wait for Tuesday to hear what we have created so far and our sound for UIL.”
Though all the choirs, have been going through their ups and downs these past few weeks, facing challenges in their music but persevering through them; many of the Wildkats are confident that they will perform well this Tuesday night.
“I’m in the varsity treble choir, and I think our choir has been doing really good. It could be better, but our music is pretty difficult, so I think we’re handling it really well,” senior Chelsea John said. “I think we’ll really kill it at our concert tomorrow, especially since we will get to use our binders.”
Coming out and showing your support for these choirs would greatly help them in their confidence and desire to work even harder in these next two weeks to prepare for success in their actual competition.
“People should definitely come out and support us and see what we’ve worked on as a choir,” sophomore Ytzel Marin said. “We’ve already been working so hard, but I think that people coming to our concert would motivate us to get even better.”
