Poms. Yelling. Cheerleaders. Stunts.
The cheerleaders always have mixed feelings about cheer camp every year. This year, they participated in the Great Wolf Lodge camp in Grapevine.
Cheer camp is an experience like no other for the new incomers.
“I liked my first year of cheer camp because I got to get new tips for myself and watch others,” freshman Lilly Clark said. “It was cool to see all of the traditions.”
The preferences of camps differ as they all vary in what’s included.
“Last year’s cheer camp was way better in quality overall,” sophomore Abbie Steirman said. “The practice areas were smaller and everything felt very rushed.”
The cheerleaders won what some would consider “the biggest award” on the first day of camp.
“My favorite memory this year was winning the banana the first day of camp after everything we went through that day,” junior Kyndall Schiffner said.
For the seniors, it was an emotional journey as they participated in camp for the very last time.
“Since this was my last ever camp, I tried to give everything I had and did my part.” senior Gia Casso said. “I won multiple awards and felt a sense of relief after everything was done with.”
The teams strive to be better every day, but a few members of the squad have bigger goals in mind.
“Our goals for this season would probably be placing at the UIL competition and continuing the growth of our culture,” senior Mylee Williams said.
The team is loaded with 60 teenage girls, so it can be difficult to all get along well, especially when everyone is hungry and tired at a camp with many other schools with even more girls.
“The bond between the Willis cheerleaders is definitely tricky, but we are slowly learning to come together,” senior Maddi Smith said.
