Most Saturday mornings when students are catching up on their sleep or planning a fun day with friends, the members of the cross country team are lining up to run miles and miles at meeting in Cypress, Spring and Magnolia.
The students wake up early, and almost everyday before school they practice to prepare for their upcoming meets. This season is looking to be promising and these athletes are excited about training toward the district meet in October. In preparation for the new cross country season that is starting soon, the team has trained in new ways that has pushed them past their limits and helped them grow.
“We’ve had more people who are faster that have made us work harder,” sophomore Maribel Vazquez said. “It has made me run a lot faster, be more competitive, and have a better mindset.”
Setting personal goals helps these athletes not only push themselves on the course, but motivates their team be successful and stay focused on the upcoming meets.
“I want some us to make it to regions this year,” senior Heath Grant. “Personally, I would also like to make it to regions this year.”
Even though cross country can be strenuous, these athletes know that this sport is the one for them. The team and atmosphere provides the athletes with the ability to grow and thrive as a individuals and a team.
“The girls are really nice and it’s a team oriented sport,” sophomore Avery Clark said. “You get to spend a lot of time with your teammates and grow with them.”
With the cross country season starting very soon, the excitement and competitive spirit awaiting the upcoming meets starts to fuel the athletes as they prepare to race.
“The season is looking very competitive,” senior Fernanda Rodriguez said. “There are good upcoming freshman that push us in practice. I am excited for the district meet this year to see how much I improve from last year’s times.”
The district meet is one of the biggest meets that these athletes look forward to each year, the team is feeling prepared, excited, and ready for this upcoming meet to showcase their hard work.
“We feel prepared for district because we have been putting in the work,” sophomore Caroline Hopwood said. “We have been pushing ourselves on the track and the field.”
