The Wildkats are zooming past their district 13-6A opponents, advancing to 9-0 after the 63-17 victory over Oak Ridge. The team is on track to become 10-0 undefeated district champions for two years in a row. The last regular season game is Thursday at Woodforest Stadium against the Grand Oaks Grizzlies.
This has never occurred in the history of Wildkat football ever and shows the power of head coach Trent Miller.
“It’s crazy I’ve been on this historic team, and built a legacy and standard going forward,” senior Mason Isbell said.
When going 10-0 in the regular season the main goal is to go deep into the playoffs and reach for a state championship. Last year Willis made history and played in the third round against eventual state champions the Desoto Eagles.
“Coach Miller has set the standard to this type of outcome for the season, and we can capitalize on this year’s opportunity to run the table,” senior Luke Reynolds said.
The outside sees the wins and losses of the football team, but behind the scenes there is a lot more grinding even when the team is flooded with success.
“Everyday we have to watch a lot of film to understand what we are going up against, and often re-watch some of the same film three to five times,” senior Kelan Harris said. “We all buy into it knowing that it will do us right when we need to make a big play in the big moments when called upon.”
All this time spent together winning takes a lot of team chemistry and trust within the program to succeed. Long after the last whistle sounds, the Wildkats will take memories of the perfect season with them.
“All the time we pour into football translates into great friendships that we all will carry throughout high school, and maybe even further,” senior Warren Nolan said.
