Who knew that something that would show kindness would later represent one of the most terrifying pieces of American horror? That’s what Smile 2 does to its audience. We are so used to seeing smiling as a good, cheerful emotion, so what happens to us when we see it in a near-death experience? Smile 2 was not just a horror movie for us to enjoy, it was a glimpse into the mind of a person who absolutely lives the life of Skye Riley. People think it’s scary until they realize that this is what someone is actually going through.

The movie starts off with finishing off the cliffhanger from the last movie. From it, we gain that Lewis Fregoli (Lewis Gage) is the new vessel for the curse. Shortly after the introduction, we are introduced to sensational popstar Skye Riley (Naomi Scott) who has recently recovered from an accident which changed her entire life. Shortly after coming on to the show and getting dropped off at her hotel, she then goes to visit high school friend Lewis Fregoli. After a quick minute in there, he then kills himself (actually it’s the smile curse doing this, but to her it is Lewis who is killing himself) and that is when the curse is passed on to her. From that point on, her life is put onto a timer. Her shows are ruined by the curse, her fan meets are ruined by the curse, and even her own friends and family are ruined by the curse. Once you realize what is real and what is fake, it gets even trickier from there.

This movie was an absolute masterpiece of horror. Not only did it have that disturbing yet calm atmosphere to it, but the jumpscares were completely out of pocket. They would be in moments where you could not expect it, almost like a safe space for you to reflect. This movie even made me in shambles. I was absolutely terrified after watching the film, and even to this day I still refuse to believe it. 🙂
