The concept of the new horror and sci-fi film “Companion” is not particularly unique, but the execution makes it a wild ride from start to finish. It is classified as a horror movie, but I think the thriller genre fits it best.
Many critics have stated that the trailer spoils the plot, but everything revealed in the trailer is seen very early in the movie, leaving the majority of the film unknown. I had seen the trailer before watching it and I saw it with my boyfriend, who knew nothing about it. In my opinion, the watching experience was even, and no prior knowledge of the film was needed to enjoy it.
Jack Quaid (Josh) and Sophie Thatcher (Iris), along with the entire cast, give amazing performances. Up until the film’s close, it was difficult to love, loathe, or even decide which character to support since each actor and actress gave it their all. Due to the unpredictability, it was an enjoyable journey.
I particularly enjoyed the way the dialogue slowly builds tension. The film also uses vintage-inspired clothing to contrast against the futuristic technology. Costumes are usually overlooked in horror/thriller films, but in this case, it helps to give the film a distinct personality that perfectly complements the film’s tone.
Along with underlying themes of control, relationship dynamics, the moral implications of technology, and much more, there is a significant deal of bloodshed and violence. The film overall is very well rounded and I hope studios begin producing movies similar because of its enjoyability. You should definitely check out “Companion” if you’re searching for a dark comedy with some twists.
