After months of hard work and determination a well known Wildkat had an outstanding performance and brought a wave of pride to the entire community.
Sophomore Drue Walker is now officially the #1 piccolo player in Texas. His dedication has brought him to the top.
“Becoming #1 in the state was something that I had been imaging since seventh or eighth grade, but I never really expected it to happen,” Walker said. “I remember last year, when I got second, thinking that I might work my way up to first by senior year if I worked hard enough, but getting first as a sophomore was such a crazy thing to see.”
Drue couldn’t have done this without all of his friends and family supporting him throughout the whole process.
“Advice I would give to Drue is, continue to be himself no matter what and do not give up on your goals and dreams. Which I know he won’t because he is a strong and dedicated person.”
This amazing news definitely came out of nowhere to Drue.
“I was out with my family when I randomly got four or five notifications from different people congratulating me or asking if I’d see the results, which threw me off,” Walker said. “I wanted to see for myself of course, and I remember my heart was racing while I was opening the website to see the results, I think my hands might have been shaking too.”
In high school it’s always important to be apart of something because you never know all of the opportunities that you will get.
“Band and Color Guard can be scary because of how demanding the schedules are, but the truth is that we develop life-long relationships here and prepare our students for success after high school, even if they never play their instrument again after graduation,” Band Director Jason Dittfurth said. “If anyone is even a little interested in Band or Color Guard, they should reach out and set up a meeting so we can talk about it at [email protected].”
