In a world where smartphones, social media, and gaming dominate daily life, it is important for people of all ages to understand how it shapes our well-being. The Screenagers project explores the impact that excessive screen time has on teenagers, and offers real data and personal stories in order to make the topic feel more relevant in our everyday lives.
Willis ISD is hosting a couple screenings of Screenagers documentaries in the coming weeks, both at Lynn Lucas Middle School as well as the Performing Arts Center at Willis High School.
In our everyday lives, it is easy to be distracted by technology. Whether on social media, video games, or a streaming service, it is easy to be hooked and spend much longer than intended on it. Screenagers documentaries highlight the effects of this endless scrolling and excessive screen time, particularly in teenagers. Statistics allow us viewers to see that the excessive use of social media is linked to higher levels of anxiety and stress, as well as lower academic performance and poor sleep patterns. Many people may say that it is something that adults complain about, but the reality is that many of us experience the effects in our own lives.
In their documentaries, Screenagers find encouraging ways to motivate people of all ages to find healthier options when it comes to balancing their screen time and real-life interactions. Studies such as the one done by Children’s Hospital of Orange County, show that higher levels of screen time are linked to lower self-esteem, lower language success, and lower math performances. Picking up hobbies such as a sport or something artistic is proven to be a much healthier alternative when it comes to spending your time.
Willis ISD is hosting Screenager documentaries in Lynn Lucas Middle School auditorium on April 1st, April 15th, and April 17th, all starting at 6:00 p.m. The final showing is set for April 30th in the Willis High School Performing Arts Center. Following the showings, you can stay and enjoy the Family Discussion Time, where they will go into a little more detail about how technology impacts children. As a bonus, Kona Ice will be present and be able to be enjoyed by all the visitors.
Take the time to stop by and view one of the showings. It can be a strong learning experience for families and friends, and the added Kona Ice is something to look forward to following the documentaries.
