Students should focus on positive aspects of life as Wildkats

by Charnell Haywood, VOW co-editor

I hate this school. I need to move to Conroe. The Woodlands has Taco Bell in their cafeteria. Caney Creek starts school later. Huntsville has better classes. Livingston has cuter boys. College Park has better parking. Cold Spring does not have a dress code.

The complaints are heard too often and way too loud. Most of the time they are not even based on any kind of truth. There will always be negative people in the world. People who harp on why Willis is a horrible place will always exist. These haters (for lack of a better word) want to make all students believe only the negative about school.

Some people are so hung up on what they can’t do or what they don’t have that they lose focus on the positive side. Everyone has a right to be happy at school, but it’s up to each person to find that path and walk it proud.

The truth is this school is just as great as the surrounding schools. In fact, it could even be the best school around.

The district motto is one team, one purpose. Willis comes together as a community during the toughest times. During the games the fans fill up the bleachers wearing Wildkat purple. The administrators and school board are constantly working to improve the experience at Willis. There are literally rooms full of people working every day to make the school and district better.

The course offerings here are unparalleled in this area. Willis offers biology DC/AP, English 3 and 4 DC/AP, PreCal DC and our newest anatomy DC.  After taking advantage of the DC and AP offerings, students can start college semesters ahead of their peers from other schools.

This is also the second year with the CTE center. Students are offered so many different categories of learning involving different fields. Culinary Arts, robotics, production, business, engineering, mechanics, construction, welding, interior designing, law , health clinic, cosmetology and even real estate. A good portion of these classes offers a certification at the end of the year which could mean jobs right of high school.

Our extracurricular activities are also a reason to brag. Leo club, Interact club, German club, Drama club, HOSA, Art club, FFA, Robotics Club and our newest additions FCCLA club and the gamer club.  We have an official pit crew who cheer at the football games. Our media programs have won contests at the state level. Our Sweethearts’ trophies are so numerous they cannot fit in the room. The band has a long legacy of excellence, and the first two years of the color guard was filled with awards and accolades.

Yes, Willis is boring if a student doesn’t get involved. Yes, school could seem pointless if a student has the mindset that none of this matters. Each person controls their experience. Each Wildkat makes their own decisions. If a student is not enjoying their time at school, it means they are not doing it right. For every one negative aspect of life as a Wildkat, there are 10 positive things.

It is up to each person to control their lives. Some people are so hung up on what they can’t do or what they don’t have that they lose focus on the positive side. Everyone has a right to be happy at school, but it’s up to each person to find that path and walk it proud. High school happens one time in life. Each Wildkat must make their experience the best it can be.
