The wound is gaping and blood is everywhere. What she thought was just a scratch on her little brother is now life-threatening. A few simple steps could help safe his life.
With the right knowledge and skills, anyone can provide themselves and others with care and measures to prevent death. Stop The Bleed skills session on Thursday, April 17th. It is open to all students free of charge.
Knowing how to respond in an emergency is very important, and normally, it is only skills that medical professionals have. However, if more people have it too, then that is just more opportunities for the everyday person to be a hero and save someone’s life.
“Giving everybody the knowledge means everybody around you has the tools to help,” health science teacher Rebecca McHenry said. “So being able to stop the bleeding and take the steps just means that more people can help and pitch in if there is an emergency.”
There are millions of people per year who die from blood loss in emergencies, and with the world we live in today, we never know when the next one may be. It is important to understand the benefits of stopping the bleeding if a situation requires it.
“I believe the benefits of knowing this is very important because with as much blood that a person loses, the more at risk they are of death, so the faster they get help, the better,” junior Zamira Jaminez Wood said. “So many people die just because they can’t get help fast enough, so just being able to have the basics in mind would help.”
The Stop The Bleed sessions will be open to all students in 9th through 12th grade. There is a max of 50 people, however, additional classes will be held if a multitude of people sign up. This is a beneficial chance for everyone to learn how and what to do in case they need to in some point of their lives.
“It is to recognize life-threatening bleeding in the event there is an emergency,” nurse Candance Lottinger said. “Unfortunately, we live in a world that is not so nice, and there is always the potential for mass casualties, even just at home. If somebody makes a mishap while cutting carrots or something and accidentally cuts off a finger, you would need to know how to get that solved. So it is important for saving lives; bleeding is one of the leading causes of preventable deaths in the US.”
