For many years, the Charlotte Hornets were stuck near the bottom of the NBA. The team struggled to win games, went through multiple coaches, and often looked like a franchise without a clear plan. Fans in Charlotte watched season after season where the Hornets finished with losing records and missed the playoffs.
Part of the problem was instability. The Hornets changed coaches several times, trying to find someone who could finally turn the team around. After years with Steve Clifford as head coach, the team eventually moved on and hired James Borrego. Borrego was expected to lead a younger roster and start a rebuilding process. However, even though the team showed some improvement and played a faster style of basketball, they still struggled to become a consistent playoff team.
The Hornets’ rebuild really began through the NBA Draft. In 2018, they selected Miles Bridges, a very athletic forward known for his exciting dunks and scoring ability. Bridges quickly became one of the most entertaining players on the team and showed that Charlotte might finally be building a young core.
But the biggest turning point came in 2020 when the Hornets drafted LaMelo Ball with the third overall pick. Ball immediately changed the energy of the team. His flashy passes, creativity, and confidence made the Hornets much more exciting to watch. He won the NBA Rookie of the Year award and quickly became the face of the franchise.
For a short time, it looked like the Hornets were finally on the rise. With Ball running the offense and Bridges having one of the best seasons of his career, the team even reached the NBA Play-In Tournament. However, the success did not last. Coaching changes continued, as Borrego was eventually replaced and Steve Clifford returned as head coach. The constant changes made it difficult for the team to build consistency.
The Hornets continued focusing on young talent in the draft. In 2023, they selected Brandon Miller, a skilled forward who could score from all areas of the court. Miller quickly showed flashes of being a future star and another major piece of the franchise’s future alongside Ball.
Now, Charlotte continues trying to rebuild by drafting another young player, Kon. Like the players before him, he represents another attempt to build a strong young roster that can grow together.
The Hornets are still far from being one of the top teams in the NBA, but the difference now is that they finally have a foundation. With Ball as the team’s leader, Miller developing into a scorer, and other young players growing around them, the Hornets are hoping that their long rebuild will finally turn into real success.
For fans in Charlotte, the journey has been frustrating at times, but there is finally something that has been missing for years: hope for the future.
