Student Journalism in Action

Hundreds of student journalists attended the TAJE convention and competed in live contests on site.This student journalists from Kingwood Park High School uses her phone to capture an image in one of the categories: rizz, student journalist, big feelings, peak action and taste of San Antonio.

Tools of the Trade

Prepping for the contest is not always simple. Photographers need to make sure their equipment is functioning properly and batteries are charged. All journalists entered in the on-site contests at TAJE convention were responsible for bringing their own camera equipment and computers. Advisers were not allowed to assist in the production and selection of photos, videos and stories entered in contest.

Comic Con Craziness

Having Big Texas Comicon in the Henry B González Convention Center with the Texas Association of Journalism Educators is great for photography and people watching. Felicia, a Comicon attendee, is dressed up for a fun day of panels and shopping at the event.

A Photo Showing Rizz

The definition of "rizz" is style, charm or attractiveness. The ability to attract a romantic partner is essential to possessing rizz. These two attendee of Big Texas Comicon were dressed as Beast Boy and Raven from Teen Titans. Characters from popular movies, television shows, comics and books were all at the event. A costumes contest was held on Sunday and judged on a variety of criteria, including originality, craftsmanship and overall design.

Superheroes for the Day

Adding to the fiesta atmosphere that is ever present on the San Antonio River Walk, hoards of super heroes, villains and monsters walked the beautiful San Antonio River during the Big Texas Comicon weekend. To keep the family atmosphere of the event there are rules about costumes and weapons. Costumes and attendees cane have no explicit or inappropriate language or gestures. Costumes must be in good taste. No weapons can be functioning and no pyrotechnics, flames or smoke effects are allowed.

Indigenous Parade

On the streets on San Antonio, members of the Texas Indigenous Council walked in traditional costume. The groups has worked for over 25 years to advocate for indigenous identity and human rights. The group was marching in honor of Indigenous Day in San Antonio, October 12.

Beating for Human Rights

During the Indigenous Dignity Day Human Rights March in San Antonio, a member of the Texas Indigenous Council plays a drum dressed in an indigenous headpiece. According to the council's website, the event was held to promote Indigenous existence in Texas.

Remember the Alamo

Iconic landmarks like the Alamo were the backdrop of many photos taken by contestants at the TAJE convention. Students who entered the digital photo contest were allowed to take pictures on cameras and phones. The contest started after the 2:30 p.m. meeting and photos had to be uploaded to the contest Google drive by 6 p.m.

Go Rio

The colorful umbrellas of Casa Rio and the Go Rio tour boats are almost as famous as the Alamo. There is so much to do and see along the River Walk. Remember to bring good walking shoes because the River Walk is 15 miles long and flows through approximately five miles of downtown San Antonio. The River Walk is a public park and free to visit.

Crow Attitude

The San Antonio River Walk is filled with beautiful scenes and wildlife. This bird gave the photographer a little attitude when interrupted. The birds are always being fed by tourists and being scavengers around the many dining spots along the historic river walk.

Victoria is a junior at WHS, and it is her second year in newspaper. For the past year, she has been in Student Council, UIL Journalism, SNHS, MAO, and DECA .
