Texas high schools are notorious for their giant student body and growing numbers by the day. Year after year schools are expanding and districts have to build new schools to support the growing population of Texas high school students.
UIL released the cut off numbers for each division yesterday. With some schools in 6A having 2215 students while others top 6000, there is an argument to be acknowledged here that the UIL should add a 7A division to account for these big numbers.
While there are many high schools that fall into the 5A and 6A division requirements, some are exceeding and could qualify for this major 7A. Today, many schools in this area are starting to exceed 6A numbers. Battle of 45 rival Conroe High School is second in the state and peaking at around 5,300 students, and another district The Woodlands High School is at 4,478, while Willis is only barely above 2,800,. These schools play in every sport and can lead to advantages with the amount of kids to pull from in each school.
Up in Dallas, schools such as Allen, the biggest school in Texas, are exceeding 6,000 students and smoking the schools around with student numbers, and Plano schools almost hitting 5,000. With the amount of students flowing in these schools, advantages are obviously there with academics, competitions, and sports. There is a simple solution though, because schools can only build so many schools around them to account for this problem.
UIL can add a 7A division where mega schools like Allen and others can thrive in a major division. Once there is a 7A division many problems will solve themselves. When you build extra schools it costs way more than to keep adding on to the original. Administrations, students, zones, and materials all are affected when building extra schools. To keep money flowing and prevent headaches, a 7A division is the ideal move.Â
Texans shouldn’t be punished for everyone wanting to live in this beautiful state, let’s add more prosperity and possibility to big schools, along with making fair advantages and the best solution. 7A is the way.Â
