“Shrek” will hit the stage in the Performing Arts Center on Jan. 23 and 24, bringing the beloved fairytale to life through energetic musical numbers, colorful costumes and a cast of well-known characters. The musical is expected to draw students, families and community members alike, offering audiences multiple opportunities to enjoy a fun and entertaining night.
“I’ve wanted to do ‘Shrek’ since I was a freshman and have been doing musicals, so I might as well do it senior year,” senior Jhun Abarquez said. “All the characters are funny, but the one that makes me laugh the most is Lord Farquaad.”
While upperclassmen reflect on their time in theatre, underclassmen are discovering their passion for theatre.
“I wanted to do “Shrek” at the start because I enjoy doing the technical aspects of theatre,” sophomore Austin Montalbano said. “But I honestly wanted to act this year in order to become closer with my friends and experience something new.”
That sense of friendship and laughter is echoed throughout the cast.

“The funniest person on the cast is my best friend Sophia Von Kuschembahr,” sophomore Chege Wachege said. “My favorite part of the musical is when I’m off stage.”
The WISD 5th Grade Honor Choir is making an appearance in the musical. They have been rehearsing with the cast this week.
“They can be so rude, but they are also so funny,” Abarquez said. “They add to the musical, and I think the audience is really going to love them.”
Fans of the movie will love the musical. It is not all the same, but the cast is excited about bring the classic tale to the stage.
“When it was announced that we were doing ‘Shrek’ I was so excited, this is the perfect induction into musical theatre,” junior Emma Johnston said. “Our entire cast is such a joy to be around.”
