There are a lot of NFL fans and social media users who constantly fuel the theories of football, one of them is that the Super Bowl is scripted. Suspicious game outcomes and even biased refereeing are often mocked with many internet memes, most of which are just joking however there are few that are more on the serious side. A lot of fans think that these games are scripted and paid to either win or lose the game
Some common reasons that the Super Bowl is questioned is the conspiracy theory that the NFL pre-determines winners to gain more viewers and ratings. Fans often share suspicious evidence that they claim is proof of pre-written storylines involving famous figures, predictions about team performance and even past logo colors. A former NFL running back once joked on a podcast that the players were given scripts at the beginning of the season. While the comment was meant to be funny, it was taken seriously by some fans and went viral across the internet. In a case like this you could really believe it because you never truly know if its a joke or not
If the Super Bowl was really scripted, teams like the Dallas Cowboys who have a massive loyal fan base would be dominating the league and would appear in many more Super Bowls which has not happened. It is often said that there is absolutely no way the NFL would risk billions of dollars in revenue, or risk their standing with fans or even legal problems over a scripted Super Bowl yet we see outcomes we never would’ve seen the year before.
While many, if not most, fans do not truly believe the league is scripted, the idea continues to be a popular topic of discussion whenever the team they vote for loses in a game. Not to mention, it would be logistically impossible to coordinate all the players, coaches and officials to keep to a script without someone leaking such a huge secret, everyone’s career would be at risk and not that many players would want to be taking that risk just over a script. There is no way a player specifically is going to jeopardize his career on purpose just for the fun of it.
Despite what the theories say, the reality is that there is absolutely no real evidence that Super Bowl games are scripted or rigged. In fact, the NFL has jokingly acknowledged these theories in commercials by using the tagline “You can’t make this stuff up.” In the words of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, “The idea that the game is pre-planned is “nonsense.”
