With the 2022 NFL football season finally wrapped up with the Chiefs as the champions of the league, it is always a tradition for the 110 million people who watched the game to look back on the highly anticipated advertisement that was expected to be better than it ever was throughout the year and rate it.

Many commercials this year centered around cellular data plans, online shopping, and food, but one commercial stood out, as it won the USA Today AD Meter as the highest rated Super Bowl commercial. The Farmer’s Dog, a rising dog food brand became the first of its kind to receive the highest rating, at a 6.56 and featured a sentimental story of a labrador retriever named Bear growing up with his human. This is the first time a sentimental Super Bowl ad has won the competition since 2015.

This commercial beat out heavy competition, such as ads that featured rock idols like Joan Jett and Ozzy Osbourne and prominent companies such as Bud Light, who is notorious for their over the top Super Bowl commercials. The 2018 Super Bowl commercial  “The Bud Knight” comes to mind as it was overwhelmingly successful. The Farmer’s Dog ad “Forever” was a sentimental commercial done right because many companies try to tug at the heart strings by using animals, but have nothing to do with their health. This company encapsulated what they stood for and was able to rise to the top in a masterful way.
