WALK OF CHAMPIONS. Representing student council, sophomore Mia McGowen walks in halls as part of the celebration of the football team and their playoff performance.

Students are excited to attend school. After school sports events are jam-packed. Straight A’s on the progress reports and report cards.

These are examples of what school spirit brings to the school. With the mood being raised, students are motivated to do well in school. School spirit boosts grades and overall student participation and mood.

School spirit, by definition, is the feeling of being proud or enthusiastic about something school-related. School spirit plays an important role in students’ lives and around campuses, especially when there are events going on. For example, the WHS football team went to the playoffs, and  the school had pep rallies in support and champion walks. These events boosted school spirit which made everyone want to be involved in school and actually attempt their work, being the reason for the good grades streaks by more and more students.

School spirit is strengthened when people participate in activities going on. The activities can range from attending sports games, and pep rallies and participating in spirit weeks and dress-up days. When students and staff dress up during the spirit weeks, it makes them feel like a member of the community and have a sense of belonging, which leads the students to want to do better. This is part of the reasoning behind good grades.

School spirit boosts grades when people are motivated by the fun and entertainment surrounding them and it makes them want to try to do better. The motivation puts students in a better mood and helps them have a clear mindset. When the motivation kicks in, it makes the students really want to try and work on their curriculum.

While some students at WHS think there are no fun ways to get involved with school spirit, there are many ways to get involved and have fun. For example, there are soccer games and basketball games beginning to start up around the school and there are always clubs to join. During December there are Christmas dress up days, Christmas at the Barn, the Willis Christmas parade and so many more things to do. This is why school spirit needs to be more recognized as a positive thing for the improvement and growth of the community. Each person can achieve this goal by voicing the positive effects school spirit has created or by simply encouraging others to get involved in the community to see for themselves.
