FDA APPROVED BIRTH CONTROL. Opill is the first over the counter birth control pill approved by the FDA. It will soon be available at local drugstores across America.

The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) just approved the first over-the-counter birth control pill by Perrigo called the Opill. It will soon be available in drug stores across America and other pharmacies, retailing at around $19.99 per pack. Since this is the first contraceptive pill sold over the counter in the U.S., it is important to be informed on all aspects of it before deciding to purchase it, so here’s what people need to know about Opill.

Opill contains progesterone only, meaning it functions as a “mini-pill.” It must be taken at the same time every day for the pill to be fully effective, and when used correctly, Opill is 98% effective. When the pack is empty, it is suggested that the user should start a new pack immediately. Certain migraine and seizure medications can decrease the effectiveness of the pill, so asking a healthcare provider beforehand is advised for those individuals. Just like any medication, Opill can cause negative side effects. It’s not right for everyone and people should look into the side effects more before starting Opill. The Opill is available in a single pack, 3-pack, and a 6-pack can be purchased from their website.

Even, though the packs are around $20, most insurance companies are required to cover oral contraceptives with no out-of-pocket fees under the Affordable Care Act. Furthermore, Perrigo, the company behind Opill, just launched a cost-assistance program to ensure that it is affordable for everyone. To be eligible for this, the customer must have no insurance and make 200% less than the federal poverty level.

The Opill makes birth control more accessible to everyone, including women in poverty and is a large step for female reproductive rights. It is 100% safe and tested to be effective for anyone of reproductive age.
