Trading reading, writing and arithmetic with barbecue, baseball and Beyoncé is possible for students entering Texas colleges. Many universities offer unique and diverse academic programs, and universities in Texas take pride in offering courses that are both unusual, and fascinating. The website Texas Football Life recently published a list of unusual classes offered at some Texas universities.
These unique courses give students a chance to explore topics beyond traditional standards and discover new passions. The list includes a variety of options like How to Build a Time Machine offered by Southern Methodist University, The Zombie in Media and Popular Culture taught at Texas Tech and Texas State has a class named From Jay-Z to Kendrick Lamar, Politics, Power and Identity in Hip Hop Lit.
Want to stay close home? Sam Houston State University offers a class called Podcasting. At Rice University students can take Understanding the US Through Baseball and a class called Beer Appreciation is on the roster of the University of Houston.
While many students were excited about the different classes, some pointed out the lack of credibility given to these unique courses.
“I had never even heard of any of these courses, and I was shocked they existed.” senior Amy Roberts said.
Specifically, Texas A&M University offers an intriguing course that focuses on meat science as students dive down a path of Texas BBQ.
“I feel like I would love to be taught about BBQ and even eat my creation after.” senior Payge Livingston said.
After surveying students, It was found that the majority of students would pick the religion and sport course offered at Baylor University. A course that offers inquiry about ethical sport practices while incorporating an entertainment aspect.
“I would be most interested in religion and sports because I enjoy sports in my free time and I go to church on Sundays.” senior Taylor Sena said.
Overall, students loved the idea of getting to explore different unique courses and their history. As students enter their senior year, the talk of college becomes the buzz around campus. Seniors chat about unique and quirky classes to get a joyful start to their freshman year of college at their desired university.
“I would love to learn about Beyoncé and know even more of her history,” senior Isaiah Higgins said.
