As Cameron walks up to the lane, ball ready to throw, the crowd at 300 Bowl was silent. Every teammate, spectator and opponent held their breath as the ball traveled down the lane. Ten pins stood between him and a perfect game. The crash of pins was followed by cheers and high fives. Junior Cameron Medina did it. A perfect score of 300 – what most bowlers only dream about.
Last Monday, in a match against Lake Creek, Medina for the first time in his bowling career he scored a perfect 300. About 1 and 11,500 bowlers acquire the perfect game. His name now appears on the National High School Bowling 300/800 Award list. Medina nd his team mate senior Ryan Jackson will be on the list with some of the biggest bowlers in the game.
Although Medina started bowling at a young age, he really just started getting serious about his passion.
“I began my bowling journey at the age of 9, but I truly started to take it seriously when I turned 13,” Medina said.
Medina was always involved in bowling, and even joined a club with his cousins in middle school. He enjoyed it so much he now plays for the varsity bowling team, the AlleyKats.
“One thing that really stands out to me is how many people are unaware that bowling is recognized as a legitimate sport with its own competitive structure and community,” Medina said.
Now Medina is a junior in high school and is reaching all of his goals and making a huge achievement for himself, also helping him as he will move forward playing in college.
“I am determined to continue my bowling career in college, as I believe it offers great opportunities for growth and competition,” Medina said.
On Monday, Medina and the Alleykats faced Lake Creek. Medina was doing well, and his teammates already knew by half way through that Medina was on a roll. His teammate senior Keegan Cox gave him a high five and a hug after the excitement of Medina’s first 300. Medina’s series of 559 (300,259) is the 5th highest in Texas high school bowling history.
“Watching one of my teammates and good friends achieving a huge milestone like that is an amazing feeling,” Cox said. “Once I watched him throw about 7 in a row I knew there was no chance he was missing after that.”
Medina has achieved something so big he definitely has many more to come.
“Putting it into words, I was really nervous before the big moment,” Medina Said. “Once I took my last shot, it became one of the most exciting moments of my life, especially with all my supporters cheering me on.”
