Senior Assassin is one of those things that everyone at school seems to have an opinion on. Some people think it’s the most exciting thing about senior year, while others think it’s annoying, stressful or downright dangerous. To be honest, it’s kind of all of these things. The idea of the game is that it’s supposed to be this fun, harmless way for seniors to celebrate the end of high school. However, the reality of the game is what makes it such a big debate.
The basic idea of the game is that it’s essentially a giant game of tag with water guns. However, for most people, it’s the last big thing that all the seniors get to do together before graduation. It’s something that everyone can talk about, and it makes the most boring school days at least a little more exciting.
However, the thing is, the game is not contained in a bubble. It seeps out into neighborhoods, parking lots and other public areas, and not everyone knows what is going on. If a teenager is hiding in a bush or jumping out of a car with a water gun, especially if it is a realistic-looking one, it can be very frightening. And these are tense times, after all, so it is easy to see how things could get misconstrued. Police departments across different states have even gone so far as to warn students to be careful because they have had close calls before.
The real concern, though, is that Senior Assassin is a part of a larger conflict between what students want and what adults are concerned about. Seniors want to have their freedom and their final fling. Adults want to make sure that nothing bad happens. And both of these things make sense, which is why the game continues to spark controversy every year.
Senior Assassin doesn’t have to go away; it just has to change. If kids use bright-colored water guns, set limits, and really consider the perspective of other people, the game can continue to be enjoyable without causing problems. The tradition should be preserved, but only if everyone can enjoy it in a sane fashion.
